Year 9 Careers visit to Hertford Fire Station May 2022
As part of our ongoing commitment to support our pupils, regarding their education and possible career pathways when they leave Hailey Hall school (Post 16), our current Year 9’s visited Hertford Fire station in Hertford and were met by Watch Commander Michael Spinks of Red watch and his team of both female and male firefighters
We were split into 2 groups and were shown the on-call fire tender and all of the amazing equipment it carries. Pupils were shown the various tools used and were given the opportunity to handle them and experience how much each item weighed. They saw a command van used at major incidents.
The highlight of the visit was having various hoses attached to the fire tender and also the fire hydrant. They could see how quickly and efficiently the team worked together to be ready in a short time. They were given the opportunity to hold an actual firehose and, with the support of a firefighter were shown how to hold and use a fire hose correctly and safely to spray gallons of water over an imaginary fire. They experienced just how powerful and heavy a hose was to use. After taking turns some pupils, who were keen, got the opportunity to have another turn.
During the visit, they were informed that an ex-pupil, who left Hailey Hall School two years ago, has attended Herts Regional College on a “Uniform services course “, because he wished to become a firefighter. He is currently starting his second year on the course and is still keen to join the fire service.
During the visit pupils got the chance to ask the firefighters questions about firefighting as a career, engaging respectfully and appropriately and were a credit to Hailey Hall school.
